Economic Development and Gem & Jewellery Authority, Sri Lanka Tea Board
and Sri Lankan Airlines.

Sri Lanka High Commission Celebrates Christmas
Sri Lanka High Commission in London celebrated Christmas today, 23
December 2010, with the participation of Sri Lankans living in the
UK representing Christians as well as Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims.
The event commenced with a welcome speech by High Commissioner
Justice Nihal Jayasinghe. The High Commissioner highlighted the
significance of Christmas and said that he was pleased to see the
number of Sri Lankans who had gathered in the evening to celebrate
this important event for the Christians. He said that the Christians
in Sri Lanka can now join the Christians world over in joyous
celebrations, sharing the spirit of festival, in an environment of
peace.
Christian religious observances were performed by Father Rohitha
Rodrigo, Catholic Chaplain for Sri Lankans in the UK.
Carols were sung by the Children’s International Voices Choir led by
Dr. June. Deputy High Commissioner Mr. P M Amza delivered the vote
of thanks.
The High Commission premises were decorated with Christmas
decorations including illuminations. A reception was also held in
honour of the guests.

Sri Lanka High Commission in London joins Deyata
Sevana National Programme for planting 1.1. million trees
Sri Lanka High Commission in London joined the Deyata Sevana
National Programme for planting 1.1 million trees to mark the 65th
birthday and the inauguration of the second term of office of His
Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, with a tree-planting
event held in London, this morning.
The event took place in the garden area of the Sri Lanka government
owned site for the proposed residency for the High Commissioner, in
St. Johnswood. Trees were planted by Justice Nihal Jayasinghe at
10.07 a.m. Staff of the High Commission was present.
Arrangements are also underway for a pirith chanting ceremony and
alms giving to be held at the High Commission to invoke the
blessings on H. E. the President and the country, on Friday the 19th
and 20th.

Sri Lanka High Commission Celebrates Deepawali
Sri Lanka High Commission in London celebrated Deepawali Festival
today (11 November 2010) with the participation of Sri Lankans
living in the UK representing Hindu as well as Christian, Buddhist
and Muslim faiths.
The event commenced with the lighting of traditional oil lamp. Hindu
religious observances were performed by His Holiness Kurukkal
Ganeshamoorthi Sami Sarma.
High Commissioner Justice Nihal Jayasinghe addressing the gathering
highlighted the significance of Deepawali and said that he was
pleased to see the number of Sri Lankans who had gathered in the
evening to celebrate this most important event in the Hindu
calendar. Recalling H.E. the President’s Deepawali message he said
that the Hindus in Sri Lanka can now join the Hindus world over in
joyous celebrations, sharing the spirit of festival, in an
environment of tranquillity of peace.
Ms. Miti Desai, a leading artist from India adorned the evening with
a splendid cultural performance. A reception with traditional Hindu
cuisine followed in honour of the guests.
The High Commission premises were decorated with traditional oil
lamps and illuminations.
